The OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan facilitated the participation of four journalists and scholars from Uzbekistan in the Regional Central Asia Safety of Journalists event in Almaty, Kazakhstan, organized on 26-27 June by the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media (RoFM).

The event, titled “Beyond the Headlines: Protecting Journalists to Advance Media Freedom”, brought together professionals, academics and NGO representatives from the entire region, including, besides Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.

Karlygash Jamankulova, president of Adil Soz (A Just Word), Kazakhstan, and Begaim Usenova, director of the Media Policy Institute, Kyrgyzstan, together with RoFM Teresa Ribeiro, discussed the importance of free media in the digital age. A workshop on digital safety was followed by sessions on such topics as secure digital communications, the RoFM’s Safety of Journalists Toolbox and the particular threats to female journalists.
