German FM Heiko Maas called on NATO to start a new life, FT reported.

Maas reiterated the calls of the French president to improve political cooperation in NATO, and also called on Europe to take more responsibility for its own security.

NATO has been a life insurer in Europe for the past 70 years, said Maas adding that in order for this to continue, we need to adapt our alliance to the current challenges that we face, while Europe must take on more responsibility in security and defense policies. And we must not forget what has made NATO strong over the past 70 years outside the Atlantic - its unshakable cohesion.

Maas’ statement before the start of the meeting of the foreign ministers of the 29 NATO member states in Brussels, which was overshadowed by the comments of the French president on the brain death of NATO and Turkey’s military invasion of Syria.

Many NATO allies are also worried about the possibility of a clash at the London summit next month with Donald Trump. The US president has sharply criticized European countries, and Germany in particular, for not increasing defense spending.

Maas said the allies need to develop NATO both conceptually and politically with political living cells.

The essence of the Meuse plan is to prevent NATO from focusing too narrowly on defense and strengthening the political function of the alliance.
