Jamaica pleased with election to UN’s Economic and Social Council

Jamaica will use its election to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC) to play a more active role in advancing and strengthening the work of the Council and will collaborate with other States to fulfill its mandate in areas such as sustainable social and economic development.

New opportunity for Jamaica

“I am truly delighted by this new opportunity for Jamaica to contribute to the multilateral efforts to treat with important issues that impact not only the attainment of the National Development Plan 2030 Agenda but also the globally agreed Sustainable Development Goals,” said Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister Kamina Johnson Smith.

Jamaica, along with Brazil and Paraguay were elected earlier this week to serve on the ECOSOC for the 2019-2021 term.

Kingston said it would also use its new role to pursue the mandate of climate change, disaster risk reduction, and environmental protection.
